Relearning a Musical Instrument as an Adult

How you can reconnect and why you should never give up

As children, many folks had a musical instrument placed into their innocent little hands. So they played in the school band or orchestra, sometimes for years and with varying degrees of enjoyment before quitting. Now in adulthood, many of those former child musicians have nothing stopping them from returning to music.

Are you one of them?

Community music — It’s a thing

I’ve met tons of people who, when they find out I’m a musician, say something like, “Oh, I used to play the [trombone/saxophone/drums].” That prompts me to ask an initial question.

Why did you stop?

I’ve heard a wide range of answers, including:

  • college/graduate school
  • job
  • marriage
  • kids
  • lost interest
  • just got busy
  • forgot about it

The first four are viable reasons, but the others — not so much. However, all of them are surmountable if you truly want to get back to playing.
