How many activities give me joy? A lot. Too many to cover in one blog post. Ironically, those same activities prevent me from devoting more time, effort, money, and soul to expanding the joy they bring.

Let me explain.

Frosting Your Cake

My obligations are probably similar to yours: job, house, health, family, friends, bills, etc. Things you just cannot do without. My hobbies are varied: music, writing, investing, pets, travel, swing dance, etc. It’s kind of like a cake: the cake ingredients make it edible; the frosting ingredients make it delicious!

The obligations aren’t going anywhere, which means the cake — let’s call it a “life cake”–is cooling on the rack and awaits your choice of sweet, creamy frosting. And the great thing about a life cake is that you can change the frosting over time, almost like frosting each piece as you get it.

Because your interests and passions will change over your lifetime.

Multiple Flavors

For a personal example, I’ll focus on my two most prominent frosting ingredients — music and writing.
