Everyone wants to be understood, and sometimes — when oral communication is not a viable option for whatever reason — writing is the best way to do it. But words are like bricks in a wall: they must be used correctly so they support the larger structure. They are the foundation of that wall.

Whether we consider ourselves writers or not, we put words to paper or type text on a screen so co-workers, family, friends, customers, or the public can understand our message. And when we do write something, we should remember one of the most basic concepts of writing: spelling.

If you want folks to read your book, reply to your email, buy your product, attend your event, answer your question, enjoy your story, or order you food, your spelling should be solid.

While your audience probably doesn’t think of it as they’re reading, good spelling (among other things) inspires confidence in your message. On the flip side, doubt creeps in when they notice errors.

Navigating the spelling maze is not always easy

American English is a melting pot of words from more than 1000 years of French, Latin, Greek, and other influences.
